We’ve all been there when we procrastinated because we don’t want to do something, but when we actually crack on and do it it’s never as bad as it seems and then wonder why we wasted all that time and mental energy avoiding the task.
This can happen in all areas of our life like doing your homework, house work or the food shop. However, today I am mostly talking about procrastiniting when it comes to doing the tasks we know that is good for our health and towards our goals.
I see it all the time with my clients, we delay or completely put off doing our exercise, stretches, rehab drills or preparing our food for the next day. When we procrastinate it uses up so much mental energy and begins to make us feel negatively towards that task. We need to make sure we knock it on the head as soon as possible to avoid this draining and negative feeling that leads to a slippery slope to nowhere good which can crush our motivation long term.
You are not alone, we all experience it from time to time with different tasks. The most important thing is to be self aware and to recognise when it is happening. We often put things off and procrastinate without even realising it until it becomes an impending problem and when a decision needs to be made.
My 2 Minute Rule
The 2 minute rule is one I use on myself and have got my clients to use. So next time you don’t feel like doing something just commit to doing only 2 minutes of it whether that’s getting ready for the gym, doing your stretches or prepping your food like a boss. Once the two minutes is up then make your decision as to whether you are going to carry on or not. More often than not you will decide to carry on and you will start to feel this weight lifting and this feeling of empowerment as you take control and got the job done. This creates a positive feeling towards the task and helps with your motivation and self belief.
This is just a simple trick myself and my clients use to help stay on top of our game!
