Spicy Sweet Potato & Chicken Soup

I do love a soup with buttery bread. The problem is, I’ve realised that I don’t do too well with tomatoes, especially in such concentrated soup forms. Apparently it’s quite common due to the lectins within Tomatoes. So, this is a great tasty alternative for a few reasons. It’s filling, has a good portion of protein, is calming on the stomach, and using Sourdough means you almost no gluten (another common food sensitivity). Plus, with the spices and Tobasco, it’ll warm you up nicely!

This is a big portion – so reduce all the soup ingredients by a third and have one piece of sourdough and save 381 calories.


  • Flame Grilled Chicken Chunks (Tesco) – 108g
  • Sweet Potato – 300g
  • Carrots – 1x medium carrot
  • Light Coconut Milk – 3/5 of can
  • Crushed Garlic – ½ x teaspoon
  • Diced Onions – 1x tablespoon
  • Tobasco – ¼ x teaspoon
  • Turmeric – 1x teaspoon
  • Fresh Lemon – a squeeze
  • Vegetable Stock – 180ml
  • Sourdough – 2x medium slices
  • Butter – 12g
  • Flavour as desired with
    • Cumin
    • Ground Cloves
    • Crushed Chillies
    • Sea Salt
    • Black Pepper


Sweet Potato offers a nice hit of vitamin A, C, Copper, K & B6, plus has a lower blood sugar response than white potato. Chicken offer great sources of healthy lean protein. Turmeric is all the rage this year, due it’s ability to fight inflammation, containing antioxidants, protecting your heart, having brain boosting properties and linked to helping ward off diabetes and cancer. Sourdough gives you the enjoyment of bread with a significantly reduced hit of gluten, that is inflammatory to your gut. Garlic and Onions are prebiotics for the microbiome due to their fibre content — augmenting the growth of beneficial bacteria. Coconut milk is used as a lactose-free, vegan milk substitute, but moreover Coconut milk and oil are reported to have amazing benefits for our bodies and health due to its dense nutrient value – rich in fibre, vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5 and B6 and minerals including iron, selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous.
